Frequently Asked Questions
What is PlainCouncilTax?
PlainCouncilTax is a plain-language comparison of official Council Tax rates across England, Scotland, and Wales. It shows each authority's Band D rate, derives the nation-correct schedule for other bands, and compares annual changes. It does not publish a property-address lookup; use the official VOA or Scottish Assessors service for a specific property.
Where does the data come from?
Band D rates come from MHCLG for England, the Scottish Government for Scotland, and Welsh Government / StatsWales for Wales. England and Wales property-stock context comes from the VOA's 2025 stock release. The VOA administers valuation lists in England and Wales; Scottish Assessors maintain Scotland's valuation roll.
How often is the data updated?
We review Band D rates when the national annual tables publish for each financial year. The separate VOA stock distribution is updated when a new annual release is ingested. The current rates corpus is 2026-27; pages label the relevant financial year or source vintage.
How accurate is the data?
Published rates and stock counts retain the values in the cited official releases. Band schedules, ranks, means, spreads, annual changes, and weighted charges are our labeled calculations. For a specific property's current band use the VOA service in England or Wales, or the Scottish Assessors; for the amount due, check the billing authority's statement.
How are Council Tax bands set?
England uses bands A-H based on 1 April 1991 values; Scotland also uses A-H and 1991 values but has its own thresholds and higher E-H multipliers; Wales uses A-I based on its 2003 revaluation. The VOA administers England and Wales valuation lists, while Scottish Assessors maintain Scotland's roll.
Can I challenge my Council Tax band?
There are formal proposal and appeal routes, but the grounds and deadlines depend on the nation and circumstances. Use the Valuation Office Agency in England and Wales or your local Scottish Assessor in Scotland, and read the current official eligibility rules before acting.
Are these the same charges I will see on my bill?
PlainCouncilTax shows the council-set Band D charge plus the statutory multiplier for your band. Your bill may differ if you receive discounts (single-person, student, etc.), if your property is exempt, or if there are local additional precepts not yet captured in our dataset. Always verify the final bill against your council's own statement.
